  18. QUESTION:  I am puzzled and am sure that many of your readers may have the
  19. same question.  Is vaginitis and yeast infection the same condition?  How is
  20. it treated?

  24. ANSWER:  I think you are right, many women are confused about this situation
  25. and so the answer to your question may, hopefully, help a lot of women.
  26. Actually yeast infection is only one type of vaginitis, which is defined as
  27. any inflammation of the mucosal tissue which lines the vagina.  The causes of
  28. the problem are many and can include infections, changes in hormone balance,
  29. mechanical irritation and even allergic reactions.  There are three major
  30. types of infection, bacterial, yeast (it goes by the name of candidiasis in
  31. medical circles), and trichomoniasis.  About 20-40% of all vaginal infections
  32. can be attributed to a yeast infection.  The most common complaint is one of
  33. itching in the vaginal area.  Other problems may include redness and
  34. tenderness of external tissue, and pain during urination and intercourse.  The
  35. discharge is usually thick, white and cheesy in nature.  Symptoms like these
  36. usually demand attention from a physician and the cause can be determined.
  37. Once the cause is clear, a choice of medication can be made, and the
  38. prescription of an antifungal agent, such as terconazole, in either cream or
  39. suppository form, can rapidly cure the infection and alleviate the symptoms.
  40. Then it will be up to you and your physician to try to determine the source of
  41. your infection, so that you can take all the steps necessary not to repeat
  42. past mistakes and avoid the reoccurrence of this most uncomfortable situation.
